Why do we care about animal cruelty?
Survival of the fittest; the fittest animal will survive and leave offspring for the future. Lions devour gazelle (rip their heads off, kill their young, etc.), sharks eat fish, cats kill birds, because they are fit enough to do that in comparison to their prey. Now look at this from an evolutionary perspective and not a perspective in which your 'feelings' obscure everything. The predator utilizes it's prey to whatever it wants. Fortunately for us humans, we have been able to flourish and become the fittest of all animals. Basically, all other animals have become prey to us. Why are the emotional, and morally imprisoned humans so enraged about animal cruelty? Why can't we let Michael Vick have fun with his dogs? Finally, why do people protest if a dog gets killed, yet nothing if a roach is crushed under their shoes? Is there like a set size limit in which your emotions come into effect? Someone please shed some light on this topic.
You wouldn't expect an animal to come online and defend himself and you cannot deny the suffering of animals simply because of their inability to communicate or understand. We attach feelings to animals because we are capable of love, empathy and morality. Why would it ever be right to purposefully cause suffering?
You simply cannot compare us to animals otherwise you're going to end up wondering if after your next sexual experience your partner might well eat you and other ridiculous ideas like that. We are self aware and very intelligent beings.
You ask why its ok to crush a cockroach and not a dog and I think the answer is that you can very well accidentally crush a cockroach in a car or walking but you have to purposefully put in effort to harm a dog in a similar manner,so size would be the main factor. Also there is a special relationship between mankind and dogs which give them a very special status in the animal kingdom where they basically become family members of a sort.
One thing I want to point out is the varying levels of care towards creatures, for instance I will dedicate as much time as is required to save an insect and I actually feel very bad if I accidentally cause harm because these are things I am aware of. Its unreasonable to think I am capable of avoiding every tiny creature out there and in that respect I just have to think of it as a part of the natural order. Its some I HAVE to accept but given the chance I would stop it.
On the other topic of cruelty to large animals, there is no point, there are ways and means of avoiding it, even slaughter for food can be done with dignity and without undue stress or suffering but people simply don't see the point. I find it very upsetting and I have trouble dealing with anything like that I happen to see online or TV etc
basically it's unacceptable because its not necessary and unless we want to live like animals we should not use them as moral role models.
