What type of horse halter fits this description: Leather with a hard metal piece across the nose for training?
Our ferrier had used it with our colts to keep them tame while he was working. It was a leather halter (also a bridle if need be) that had a hard metal piece across the top and bottom of the nose--these two metal pieces were linked together, forming a sort of lever that applied pressure when pulled. When the horse acted up in any way, all I had to do was give a very slight "bump" to the lead rope, and the metal piece would immediately get the horse back into order. My mother thinks it had a French name.

Perhaps your farrier was talking about a lungeing cavesson..wait never mind that..perhaps a mechanical hackamore although they are used for riding unless he rigged it in some way to attach the lead rope or just use the reins??? Not really the intended purpose of it. You could accomplish the same thing using a halter and a lead with a chain to go over the nose for more control.
