While drawing are you supposed to rest your hand on the paper?
I have always doodled and had a passion of animation/drawing cartoons but I just cant seem to. I have seen people draw with their hand resting some with their hand above the paper. Tips?
Oh I also have a very hard time drawing 3D and basic shapes; straight lines, circles, cubes, etc.
As a Graphic Design and Studio Art major this skill has always evaded, please help me
Depends what your drawing. I find it better to keep your hand above the paper, because the oil from your hand can soak into the paper or if you have lead, charcoal, etc it can easily get onto your hand and smudge on a part of the image where you don't want it to be. Then its very difficult to get it off without ruining the rest.
As for 3D shapes, just look at boxes draw what you see. I find that once you get squares or rectangles down pat you'll be fine with the rest.
Straight lines? Well the only thing i can recommend is use a ruler, follow with a pencil ontop of it multiple times then slowly lower the ruler so you are drawing above it, just keep lowering it until you get the hang of drawing straight lines. Slow and steady, it will never be perfect so don't worry so much.
