Why is the puzzle piece a symbol used for autism awareness?

Was asked this question by a friend and couldn't find the answer online so I thought I'd ask here: does anyone know why the autism ribbon and other autism awareness things use the symbol of (multicoloured) puzzle pieces?

If you don't know for sure, I'd love to hear your theories on it, but please do mention whether it's the official reason or your own idea on it.

The puzzle piece was designed by one of the National Autism Society members and adopted at first because it looked nothing like other organizational symbols. The puzzle piece has been described as appropriate because the children suffer from a "puzzling condition" that isolates them from society.

In my opinion, I think it is interesting that they use the puzzle piece because Autism is a fundamental fractioning of the mind. This requires any therapies to replace those pieces missing or disconnected. I also like irony.
