Help with TV script writing? How would I write that someone is talking through the entire scene in background?
I'm writing a TV script just for fun and I'm at a funeral scene. I want the priest to talk for the entire scene while the main characters talk over him. How would I format that?
If you have screenwriting software, this will be much easier. Anyway, it sounds as if the priest's lines aren't important, in which case you'll want to leave them out of the script so the reader doesn't lose interest. After the scene heading, in the action, inform the reader that the priest is speaking throughout the scene, and just write the dialogue of the important characters over him. Honestly, though, it will be obvious if you set the scene during a funeral that the characters are talking amongst themselves while the priest speaks, so you may not need to mention it at all.
Simply put, anytime there's dialogue for the background that the viewers won't hear or care about, don't write it, because it doesn't advance the story and is only a part of the mood.
