Are cramps normal this stage in pregnancy?
Okay well I just found out today I'm pregnant and in all my books and magazines I didn't see anything on cramping. Is it normal to cramp at about 4 weeks? I hate to ask silly questions lol but I don't want anything to happen to the baby I prayed so long for!
One of my very first pregnancy signs was having very painful cramps in the middle of the night that would last for about 30sec to a minute.
I didn't know I was pregnant then and found them very bizarre, told my sister and she said she had the same when first pregnant (so I tested and I was).
Apparently it is the round ligament of the uterus stretching, which is more painful if you have never been pregnant before (ie. never been stretched before!). My baby was absolutely fine, but the severe cramps came occasionally until about 12 wks. Often they were so painful I would have to stop driving, and put my seat back and lie down until they passed (and they definitely made me anxious!).
After my first 2 kids, I had 2 miscarriages. Neither of my mc started with cramping, they started with bleeding. So don't worry about cramping too much, but if you have bleeding see a doctor. (but remember only 50% of women who bleed in pg go on to mc, the other 50% have healthy babies)
