There are several sources of people who may give you an evaluation. Dealers, members of stamp clubs, can be helpful. They are also usually looking for a good deal. The sad part is - most collections are not worth a dealer's time - particularly collections that are world-wide and contain 10,000 to 15,000 stamps or less. I have purchased some of these for as little as $50, and for many more I would pay nothing. Do not accept the first offer - get several opinions, and ask friends for collectors they may know and trust.
Once a lady presented me with a collection of mint stamps - I pointed out that these were purchased in bulk by dealers/collectors for 30% to 60% of face value. With the exception of one piece, I suggested she use it for postage,.
There is a standard reference for the North American market - Scott's Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue -it may be available in your local library. In Canada, use the Unitrade catalogue for Canadian stamps. Read the comments re evaluating stamps in each reference you use. Catalogue values are for stamps in near pristine condition; any faults will reduce the value greatly, or even make them unsalable.
