How should I store sea shells in liquid in a jar?

I have a glass jar full of sea shells that look great in water. What liquid can I use to store them permanently (as I know the water will eventually go murky)? I can seal the lid of the glass jar. The lid is glass too.

I used clear Gel Wax for candlemaking. It can be a little pricy, but it is so worth it. My husband and I picked out glass vases in a shape that were appealing to us ( we used tall rectangular flower vases). We also put sand in the bottom of the vases (awesome affect), kind of at an angle, then poured a little bit of melted wax over it. (Just follow the directions on the Gel Wax container. May I also suggest buying an inexpensive but sturdy saucepan to melt the wax in.) From there, we worked in layers putting in a few shells at a time, letting it cool a bit, then adding more wax and more shells. This layered the shells so that that look like they are "floating" in the "water". It has such an awesome effect. I couldn't believe how much fun we had and it looks so incredible!!! You won't be disappointed. Good luck, this is a fun project!
