How can I restore a washed out clothing tag?

I have an old, WWII era Eisenhower jacket, and, as with most jackets like these, a small, white tag made of what appears to be a thin piece of cotton with the maker and date stamped onto it is sewn into the inside pocket.

However, the previous owner probably washed the jacket, so the black lettering on the tag is almost completely washed-out and impossible to read. I would love to know the date that this jacket was made.

Is there any type of treatment or light I can use to make the tag readable, or is the information on it gone forever?

Try UV light... you may be able to make it out. Photography, then using a tool like GIMP or photoshop may also be able to bring up some details.
