How do you remove paint from wrought iron? Can you spray paint it?
I have wrought iron railings in my townhouse. How can I remove the paint that is peach paint over white paint that's coming off? I want like a pewter color that blends in with all decor. Please help. Can I do this myself? If I cannot spray paint, what kind of paint should I use?
First please test the paint for lead. It was very traditional on older iron to use lead paint. If it tests positive, you will need to use a professional as there are strict rules on dealing with lead paint. However if you are lucky you will not have that issue.
There are good paint strippers now days, some are even organic and work wonders. Talk to your local paint suppliers. You will need wirebrushes, soft clothes, rubbing alcohol, plastic scrubbers....and lots and lots of patience. It will be possible to do it, but will take time and effort if you want to do it correctly. (Some sources say sandblast/grit blast...I really don't recommend that, especially in your case. You have no idea what paint was used in the past. And doing that indoors - leaves a really disaster to clean up.)
Always undercoat with a good paint before you apply the color you want. This will protect the metal and give you a better top coat color.
